Bullets in 8 mm calibre normally have a diameter of .323 inch. This bullet diameter is used in several rifle cartridges, including the 8×57 IS, 8×57 IRS, 8×68 S and 8 mm Remington Magnum.
The designation 8 mm does not refer to one specific cartridge. Different cartridges use bullets of the same diameter but may differ considerably in case capacity, maximum cartridge length, performance and intended application. When selecting a bullet, consider not only diameter and weight, but also construction, length, barrel twist rate and the availability of reliable load data.
Which cartridges use .323 bullets?
The designation 8 mm (.323) describes the bullet diameter. This diameter is found in classic European cartridges, rimmed cartridges for break-action and combination guns, powerful magnum cartridges and several American designs.
Common European cartridges
- 8×57 IS – a widely used rimless rifle cartridge for bullets with a diameter of .323 inch.
- 8×57 IRS – the rimmed version, used among other applications in break-action, double and combination guns.
- 8×60 S – an extended cartridge that also uses .323 bullets.
- 8×64 S – a powerful European rifle cartridge with a larger case capacity than the 8×57 IS.
- 8×65 RS – a rimmed cartridge used in certain European hunting rifles.
Powerful and magnum cartridges
- 8×68 S – a powerful rimless cartridge with a comparatively large case capacity.
- 8 mm Remington Magnum – a long magnum rifle cartridge for .323-inch bullets.

Classic and historic cartridges

Not every cartridge with “8 mm” in its name automatically uses a .323-inch bullet. Historic cartridges in particular may use different diameters. Always verify the official cartridge specification, the actual bore dimensions and reliable load data before selecting a bullet.
The difference between 8×57 IS and 8×57 I
With 8 mm cartridges, the distinction between I and IS is especially important. The 8×57 I is an older version with a smaller bullet diameter. The 8×57 IS normally uses bullets with a diameter of .323 inch.
The letter “I” was sometimes read as a “J” in older German documentation. This is why designations such as 8×57 JS and 8×57 JRS are also encountered. In practice, do not rely on the cartridge name alone. Confirm the exact chamber and bore dimensions of the firearm.
Never use a .323 bullet without verification in a firearm intended for a smaller 8 mm bullet diameter. An incorrect combination may cause dangerously high pressure.
Different types of 8 mm bullets
8 mm bullets are available in a variety of profiles and constructions. The most suitable design depends on the cartridge, firearm, barrel twist rate, shooting distance and intended application.
- Full Metal Jacket bullets – constructed with a jacket surrounding the core and used in various sporting and historic loads.
- Soft Point – designed with a partially exposed lead tip.
- Round Nose – featuring a rounded nose and often used in classic cartridge combinations.
- Spitzer bullets – with a pointed profile for reduced aerodynamic drag.
- Boat Tail – designed with a tapered rear section.
- Flat Base – constructed with a flat base and often a more compact overall length.
- Bonded bullets – manufactured with the core bonded to the jacket.
- Monolithic bullets – made from a single material such as copper or a copper alloy.
- Polymer-tipped bullets – fitted with a separate tip as part of the bullet profile.
- Match bullets – focused on consistent shape, weight and construction.
Choosing the correct bullet weight
Bullet weight is measured in grain. Light, medium and heavy bullets are available in 8 mm (.323). The appropriate weight range depends on the cartridge, case capacity, barrel twist rate and available load data.
Lighter bullets may allow a higher muzzle velocity. Medium-weight designs are used in many different 8 mm cartridges. Heavy and long bullets may offer a more favourable ballistic profile, but they often place greater demands on stabilisation and available cartridge length.
Two bullets of the same weight can differ considerably in length. A monolithic bullet is generally longer than a traditional lead-core bullet of the same weight. This may affect seating depth, available case space and cartridge overall length.
Barrel twist and stabilisation
The barrel twist rate indicates the distance over which a bullet completes one full rotation. Long and heavy 8 mm bullets generally require a faster twist rate than short and light designs.
Stabilisation is not determined by weight alone. Bullet length, profile, material, velocity and atmospheric conditions may also play a role. Always confirm that the selected bullet is suitable for the twist rate of the firearm.
Use current load data developed specifically for the exact cartridge and bullet. Data for the 8×57 IS must not be used for the 8×68 S or 8 mm Remington Magnum.
Differences between 8 mm cartridges
Although several cartridges use the same .323-inch bullet diameter, their cases may differ significantly. The 8×57 IS, for example, has a different case capacity and maximum cartridge length from the 8×68 S or 8 mm Remington Magnum.
Load data is therefore never interchangeable. Powder type, powder charge, primer, seating depth and maximum cartridge length must always be matched to the exact cartridge.
Permitted pressure levels may also differ between cartridges. Use only reliable loading manuals and always begin with the recommended starting load.
Cartridge length and seating depth
Bullet length affects cartridge overall length and the available space inside the case. Long pointed and monolithic bullets may extend further into the case than shorter designs at the same seating position.
Changing seating depth also changes usable case volume and may therefore affect pressure development. Adjust seating depth only on the basis of reliable load data and accurate measurements.
The maximum usable cartridge length is also determined by the magazine, chamber and throat dimensions. A cartridge that fits the chamber does not automatically feed correctly from the magazine.
Rimmed cartridges and break-action firearms
Rimmed cartridges such as the 8×57 IRS and 8×65 RS are used in break-action, double and combination guns. The rim supports correct positioning and extraction of the cartridge from the chamber.
Use only cases, dies and load data specifically intended for the rimmed cartridge version. Components and data for a rimless cartridge are not automatically suitable for the corresponding rimmed cartridge.
What should you consider?
- Confirm that the bullet has an actual diameter of .323 inch.
- Determine whether the firearm is chambered for the I, IS, IR or IRS version.
- Use only current load data for the exact cartridge and selected bullet.
- Match bullet weight and length to the barrel twist rate.
- Check maximum cartridge overall length and available magazine space.
- Consider bullet construction and total bullet length.
- Never interchange load data between different 8 mm cartridges.
- Do not replace one bullet with another of the same weight without verification.
- Always begin with the recommended starting load from a reliable source.
- Inspect every completed cartridge carefully before use.
