Primers provide the ignition source for every cartridge and are an essential component in the reloading process. The correct primer helps ignite the powder charge reliably and contributes to consistent cartridge performance. Choosing the Correct Primer

The correct primer depends on the cartridge, case design and published load data. Pistol cartridges generally use pistol primers, while rifle cartridges require rifle primers. Within these groups, primers are commonly divided into Small and Large sizes.

Primer dimensions and ignition characteristics differ between types. A primer should therefore never be substituted simply because another version appears to fit the primer pocket. Follow current data from a recognised reloading manual or the powder manufacturer.

Small Pistol and Large Pistol Primers

Small Pistol primers are used in many common handgun cartridges with a small primer pocket. Large Pistol primers are intended for cartridges designed around the larger primer size. The correct version is determined by the cartridge case and the applicable load data.

Some pistol primers are also offered in Magnum versions. These are not automatically interchangeable with standard primers and should only be used when the selected load data specifically calls for them.

Small Rifle and Large Rifle Primers

Small Rifle and Large Rifle primers are intended for rifle cartridges with the corresponding primer pocket dimensions. Rifle primers are designed for the ignition requirements and operating conditions associated with rifle ammunition.

Some cartridges may be available with different primer pocket formats depending on the case manufacturer. Always inspect the cases and confirm which primer type is required before beginning the loading process.

Standard, Magnum and Match Primers

Standard primers are suitable for many commonly published loads. Magnum primers provide a different ignition characteristic and may be specified for larger powder charges, certain slow-burning powders or particular environmental conditions. They should only be used where suitable published data is available.

Match primers are manufactured with an emphasis on production consistency and are often selected by precision and competition reloaders. Their use does not remove the need for careful case preparation, accurate powder charges and a consistent loading process.

Reliable Powder Ignition

A correctly selected and properly seated primer supports consistent ignition of the powder charge. Primer choice can affect pressure development and cartridge behaviour, which is why changes to primer brand or type should be treated as a component change.

When changing primers, begin again with suitable published load data and do not assume that the previous powder charge will produce identical results.

Primer Seating

Primers should be seated squarely and to the correct depth in a clean, undamaged primer pocket. In normal practice, a correctly seated primer sits slightly below the case head. A primer that is not seated fully may cause unreliable ignition or handling problems.

Use a compatible hand priming tool, bench priming tool or press-mounted priming system. Check that the primer size, shell holder and seating components are suitable for the cartridge case being used.

Primer Pocket Inspection

Before seating a new primer, inspect the primer pocket for dirt, damage or deformation. Cases with loose, enlarged or damaged primer pockets should not be reused. Military cases may contain a crimp that must be processed correctly before a new primer can be seated.

Do not force a primer into a case. Excessive resistance may indicate an incorrect primer size, a remaining crimp, damaged brass or misalignment in the priming tool.

Recognised Primer Manufacturers

Depending on availability, SEM Jacht & Schietsport may offer primers from manufacturers such as CCI, Federal, Fiocchi, Sellier & Bellot, Remington and Winchester. Available types and packaging may vary.

When changing from one manufacturer to another, treat the primer as a different component and consult suitable load data before continuing.

Storage and Handling

Store primers in their original packaging in a cool, dry location, away from heat, open flames, impact and moisture. Keep them separate from powder and other ignition sources. Only remove the quantity required for the current reloading session.

Do not use damaged, contaminated or deformed primers. Follow the handling and storage instructions supplied by the manufacturer and the guidance in recognised reloading manuals.
