.45 ACP (.451 / 11.46 mm) bullets for reloading

Bullets in the .45 ACP category generally have a diameter of .451 inch, which is approximately 11.46 mm. Cast or coated lead bullets may also have a diameter of .452 inch. These bullets are used for reloading cartridges including .45 ACP, .45 Auto Rim, .45 Super and .460 Rowland.

Although these cartridges may use a similar bullet diameter, they differ considerably in case design, overall cartridge length, pressure level and intended use. Always use current load data developed specifically for the exact cartridge, bullet weight and bullet construction being used.

Which cartridges use .451- and .452-inch bullets?

Bullets with a diameter of approximately .451 or .452 inch are used for cartridges including:

  • .45 ACP – also known as .45 Auto and a widely used rimless pistol cartridge.
  • .45 Auto Rim – a rimmed cartridge developed for use in certain revolvers.
  • .45 Super – a cartridge with the same external dimensions as .45 ACP, but designed for a higher pressure level.
  • .460 Rowland – a longer, more heavily loaded cartridge that may also use .451- or .452-inch bullets.

Not every bullet is automatically suitable for all these cartridges. Weight, length, profile, jacket construction, seating depth and available load data determine whether a specific design can be used.

.45 ACP and .45 Auto

.45 ACP and .45 Auto are two names for the same cartridge. ACP stands for Automatic Colt Pistol. It is a rimless cartridge that normally headspaces on the case mouth.

Because the cartridge headspaces on the case mouth, a taper crimp is generally used. A roll crimp is normally unsuitable for standard .45 ACP because it can turn the case mouth too far inward.

The completed cartridge length must suit the bullet profile, the chamber of the firearm and the operation of the magazine. A cartridge that is too long or too short may cause feeding or chambering problems.

.45 Auto Rim

.45 Auto Rim generally uses the same bullet diameter as .45 ACP, but has a protruding rim and is intended for use in suitable revolvers.

Because of the differences in case design and use, load data for .45 ACP and .45 Auto Rim is not automatically interchangeable. Always check the specified cartridge length, crimp and load data for the exact cartridge.

.45 Super

.45 Super closely resembles .45 ACP externally, but is intended for a higher pressure level. It must only be used in firearms that are specifically approved for this cartridge.

Load data for .45 ACP and .45 Super must not be interchanged. The case, primer, bullet construction and firearm must all be suitable for the higher load level.

.460 Rowland

.460 Rowland also generally uses .451- or .452-inch bullets, but has a longer case and operates at a considerably higher pressure level than standard .45 ACP.

Not every .45 ACP firearm is suitable for .460 Rowland. Use only a properly configured system and follow the instructions provided by the firearm manufacturer, conversion system manufacturer and component manufacturers.

Why does .45 ACP use a .451-inch bullet?

The calibre designation .45 does not exactly match the actual diameter of a modern bullet. Jacketed .45 ACP bullets generally have a diameter of .451 inch.

Cast or coated lead bullets are often slightly larger, for example .452 inch. This may provide a suitable fit and seal in the barrel. The correct diameter depends on the barrel dimensions, bullet construction and manufacturer recommendations.

Different types of .45 ACP bullets

.45 ACP bullets are available in different profiles, weights and constructions. The correct choice depends on the firearm, barrel, magazine and selected load data.

  • Round Nose – a rounded bullet profile widely used in .45 ACP.
  • Flat Point – features a flat front.
  • Truncated Cone – a tapered profile with a flat nose.
  • Semi-Wadcutter – combines a flat nose with a pronounced shoulder.
  • Hollow Point – features a cavity in the nose.
  • Full Metal Jacket – the core is largely enclosed by a jacket.
  • Copper-plated bullet – covered with a relatively thin copper layer.
  • Cast lead bullet – available in different hardness levels and diameters.
  • Coated bullet – a lead bullet with a protective coating.
  • Monolithic bullet – manufactured from a single material such as copper or a copper alloy.

Round Nose, Flat Point and Semi-Wadcutter

Round Nose bullets have a rounded nose and are widely used in .45 ACP cartridges. This profile can support reliable feeding in firearms originally designed around this bullet shape.

Flat Point and Truncated Cone bullets have a flat front and may require a different overall cartridge length from Round Nose designs.

Semi-Wadcutter bullets have a pronounced shoulder and often produce clearly defined holes in paper targets. Not every pistol feeds this profile equally well, so cartridge length and magazine function should always be checked.

Choosing the correct bullet weight

Bullet weight is measured in grain. Various weights are available for .45 ACP, from relatively light designs to heavier bullets.

The correct weight depends on the bullet construction, twist rate, desired cartridge length and available load data. A heavier bullet is generally longer and therefore occupies more space inside the case.

Bullets of the same weight are not automatically interchangeable. A lead, copper-plated, jacketed or monolithic bullet may have a different length and produce different resistance in the barrel at the same weight. This affects seating depth, usable case capacity and pressure development.

Bullet diameter and fit

Jacketed bullets for .45 ACP generally have a diameter of .451 inch. Cast or coated lead bullets may have a diameter of .452 inch.

Correct fit helps provide an effective seal in the barrel. An undersized bullet may not seal properly, while an oversized bullet can cause problems during seating, chambering or pressure development.

When in doubt, check the barrel dimensions, chamber and the recommendations of the bullet manufacturer and selected load data.

Twist rate and stabilisation

The twist rate determines how quickly the bullet rotates while travelling through the barrel. Bullet length, weight, velocity and twist rate together influence stabilisation.

Long or heavy bullets may place different demands on the twist rate than shorter or lighter designs. Bullet length is at least as important as weight.

A monolithic bullet is often longer than a traditional lead-core bullet of the same weight. Check whether the selected design is suitable for the barrel and the available load data.

Overall cartridge length and seating depth

Overall cartridge length is determined by the case, bullet profile and seating depth. In .45 ACP, the completed cartridge must feed reliably from the magazine into the chamber and chamber fully.

A bullet with a broad nose or pronounced shoulder may require a different cartridge length from a Round Nose design. Do not rely only on a general measurement; follow load data for the exact bullet being used.

Deeper seating reduces usable case capacity and may increase pressure. Change seating depth only when supported by reliable load data.

Headspace on the case mouth

.45 ACP is a rimless cartridge that normally headspaces on the case mouth. The case mouth must therefore retain enough of its shape after crimping to headspace correctly.

Excessive crimping may allow the cartridge to enter too deeply into the chamber or prevent it from locating correctly. Always check the case mouth, overall cartridge length and chamber fit.

Crimping .45 ACP cartridges

A taper crimp is generally used for .45 ACP. This removes the flare created at the case mouth during bullet seating without rolling the case mouth strongly inward.

Insufficient crimping may cause chambering problems. Excessive crimping can affect the bullet, case or headspace function.

Copper-plated bullets have a relatively thin copper layer. Excessive crimping can damage this layer. Match the crimp to the bullet construction and manufacturer specifications.

Lead, copper-plated and jacketed bullets

Cast lead, coated, copper-plated and jacketed bullets differ in construction and friction. Load data should therefore not be transferred between these types without proper verification.

Copper-plated bullets may be subject to manufacturer limits for velocity and crimp strength. Jacketed and monolithic designs may create greater barrel resistance than lead or coated bullets.

Always use load data suitable for the exact diameter, weight and construction of the selected bullet.

Reliable feeding and chambering

Reliable magazine feeding is important with pistol cartridges. Bullet profile, overall cartridge length, seating depth and crimp all influence operation.

A completed cartridge must fit smoothly into the chamber and allow the action to close fully. This can be checked with a suitable cartridge gauge or the removed barrel of the firearm, provided this is done safely and according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

When changing to a different bullet profile, the overall cartridge length must be checked again. A measurement that works with a Round Nose bullet is not automatically suitable for a Flat Point or Semi-Wadcutter design.

What should you consider?

  • Check whether the bullet is suitable for the exact cartridge.
  • Verify the diameter, weight and bullet construction.
  • Use only current load data for the exact cartridge and selected bullet.
  • Never interchange load data for .45 ACP, .45 Super and .460 Rowland.
  • Consider the length and profile of the bullet.
  • Check the specified seating depth and overall cartridge length.
  • Confirm that the completed cartridge feeds reliably from the magazine.
  • Check that the cartridge fits completely into the chamber.
  • Use a taper crimp for .45 ACP in most cases.
  • Retain sufficient case-mouth shape for correct headspace.
  • Do not substitute another bullet of the same weight without checking the data.
