Airgun Pellet Shapes
Pellet Head Shapes for Airguns: Why Are There So Many Different Designs?
Anyone shopping for airgun pellets will quickly notice that they are available in many different head shapes. Flat, domed, round ball, pointed, hollow point and slugs may appear similar at first glance, but each design has been developed for a specific purpose. The shape of the pellet head influences aerodynamics, flight stability, energy transfer and ultimately the accuracy on target.
There is therefore no single pellet that performs best in every situation. The right choice depends on your air rifle or air pistol, the shooting distance, the shooting discipline and your personal preferences. A pellet that delivers excellent accuracy in one airgun may not produce the same results in another. For this reason, manufacturers such as JSB, H&N Sport, RWS, Air Arms, Crosman and Gamo produce a wide range of pellet head shapes, allowing every shooter to choose the most suitable ammunition for their application.
How Does Pellet Head Shape Affect Performance?
As soon as a pellet leaves the barrel, it is affected by air resistance. The shape of the pellet head determines how air flows around the projectile and how well it retains its velocity during flight. Some designs are intended to deliver maximum accuracy at short range, while others perform better over longer distances or have been developed for more specialised applications.
Most modern airgun pellets feature the well-known diabolo design, combining a shaped head with a narrow waist and a hollow skirt. This construction stabilises the pellet during flight and contributes to the excellent accuracy for which diabolo pellets are known. Slugs are an exception. Their longer, almost cylindrical shape gives them different aerodynamic characteristics, making them particularly suitable for high-powered PCP air rifles.
Although the differences between pellet head shapes may seem small, they can have a significant effect on group size and consistency, especially at longer ranges. That is why experienced shooters often test several pellet designs before deciding which one performs best in their airgun.
Accuracy Depends on More Than Pellet Shape
Pellet head shape is only one factor influencing performance. Calibre, pellet weight, muzzle velocity, barrel quality and the overall setup of the airgun all contribute to the final result. Even two identical air rifles can show a preference for different pellet brands or head shapes.
For that reason, it is always worth testing a variety of pellets. Comparing different head shapes and weights allows you to determine which combination delivers the tightest groups and the highest level of consistency in your own airgun.
Which Pellet Shape Is Right for Your Shooting Style?
Our range includes several different pellet head shapes, each developed with its own characteristics and purpose. Some are intended for competition shooting, while others are better suited to recreational target shooting or high-powered PCP air rifles. Explore the categories below to learn more about each pellet design and find the right ammunition for your shooting discipline.
Explore the Different Pellet Head Shapes
Flat Pellets
Flat pellets, also known as wadcutters, have been the standard choice for target shooting at short distances for many years. Their flat front produces clean, easy-to-score holes in paper targets. Browse our complete range of flat airgun pellets.
Domed Pellets
Domed pellets feature a rounded pellet head and offer an excellent balance between stable flight and outstanding accuracy. They are among the most versatile pellet designs for both recreational and competitive shooting. Browse all domed pellets.
Round Balls
Round balls are solid lead spheres primarily used in fairground air rifles, historic airguns and certain air pistols. They differ significantly from traditional diabolo pellets and should only be used in airguns designed for this type of ammunition. Browse all round balls.
Pointed Pellets
Pointed pellets feature a sharply shaped tip and represent a distinct category within airgun ammunition. Explore our range of pointed pellets and learn more about this pellet design.
Hollow Point Pellets
Hollow point pellets are easily recognised by the cavity in the front of the pellet. This category includes a variety of designs developed for different applications. Browse all hollow point pellets.
Slugs
Slugs differ considerably from traditional diabolo pellets. Their longer and heavier design makes them especially suitable for high-powered PCP air rifles and precision shooting at extended distances. Browse our complete range of airgun slugs.
Why Test Different Pellet Shapes?
No two airguns perform exactly the same. Even identical models can show a preference for different pellets or slugs. Testing different pellet shapes, weights and brands is the best way to identify the combination that provides the highest accuracy and the smallest shot groups in your airgun.
Many experienced shooters therefore test a variety of ammunition before settling on a preferred pellet. Selecting the right pellet often improves shooting performance more than making minor adjustments to the airgun itself.
