Shell Plates for Progressive Reloading Presses

A shell plate holds multiple cartridge cases at the same time and moves them through the different stations of a progressive reloading press. With every pull of the handle, the shell plate indexes to the next station, allowing several reloading operations to be carried out simultaneously.

The correct shell plate is determined by both the calibre and the press model. Shell plates are therefore not universally interchangeable. Always check that the number and design are suitable for your progressive reloading press before ordering.

How does a shell plate work?

In a progressive press, a shell plate performs largely the same function as a shell holder in a single-stage press. The main difference is that a shell plate holds several cases at once. While one case is being resized, another can be primed and a third can be charged with powder or completed.

A correct fit is essential for smooth case movement and reliable positioning at every station. The openings in the shell plate must match the case head and rim dimensions of the cartridge case being used.

Compatibility with press and calibre

Shell plates are designed for a specific press system. A shell plate for the Lee Load-Master, for example, will not automatically fit a progressive press from Hornady, RCBS or another manufacturer. Numbering systems also differ between brands and product lines.

When choosing a shell plate, check three points: the press manufacturer, the exact press model and the calibre you want to reload. Different calibres with similar case dimensions may sometimes use the same shell plate, but this should always be verified using the manufacturer's compatibility chart.

Brands and models

This category currently contains shell plates from Lee Precision for the Lee Load-Master. The range includes models such as the Lee Load-Master Shell Plate #1S, #3, #4, #4A, #11L and #19L. Each version is intended for a specific group of calibres and case dimensions.

Check the product number on your existing shell plate or consult the Lee Precision calibre chart to identify the correct version for your reloading setup.

Shell plate or shell holder?

Shell plates are mainly used in progressive reloading presses, where several cases are processed at the same time. Shell holders are generally used in single-stage and turret presses and hold one case during each operation. The type of reloading press therefore determines which component you need.

Combine with compatible components

A progressive reloading press operates as a complete system. Combine the correct shell plate with compatible dies, a priming system, powder dispensing equipment, a case feeder and other components suitable for your press model and calibre.
